Description:

Manufactured in the early 1870s with standard factory markings, beautiful scroll engraving with punch-dot backgrounds from S&W's Master Engraver Gustave Young. Young worked with Smith & Wesson as early as 1865 after serving as Colt's Master Engraver and was the in-house engraver for Smith & Wesson starting in 1869 until his death in 1895. Note the near circular tips of many of the scroll patterns, an attribute strongly associated with Young. His sons, Oscar, Eugene, and Robert, also worked for Smith & Wesson and used similar styles. Only 10% of these Old Army revolvers are estimated to have been engraved or received special finishes making engraved pieces, especially outstanding pieces like this, particularly hard to find and especially desirable. The accompanying factory letter confirms the 6 inch barrel and grip material but lists the revolver with a blue finish when shipped on August 21, 1871 and delivered to M.W. Robinson Co. of New York City. This shipment was for 51 units in blue finish and 10 special engraved units.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus original nickel plating, mostly bright patina on the balance, small spots of old slight spotting, and general minor marks. The engraving is crisp. The grips are excellent and have attractive Schreger line patterns and some natural variation in tones. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: S.L. Hutcheson, Tom Lewis, Richard Capps and Marv Lince collections.
