Description:

The New Model No. 3 was the first revolver offered by S&W with factory target sights. Generally encountered in .44 S&W Russian, .32-44 and .38-44, this example is chambered for the scarce .455 cartridge widely used in the British Empire. Competing against Colt's Bisley, as well as the English-made target arms, New Model No. 3 Targets found many buyers overseas, and are considered one of the top competition revolvers through the close of the black powder era. New Model No. 3 frames aside from the .38-40s have been confirmed to be pre-1898. It has target sights, British proofs on the barrel, frame and cylinder, very rare 7 1/2 inch barrel, one-line rib address, right grip panel numbered to a different gun, and matching serial numbers on the butt, cylinder, barrel, and barrel latch.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 85% original blue finish with a smooth brown patina on the balance. 97% original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger guard. The grips are also very fine with some minor handling marks and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. One of the rarest S&W New Model 3s to be offered for sale! Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
