Description:

This is a very late production Springfield Armory M1 Garand that was manufactured circa 1954 as a National Match rifle. It has the very scarce "X" prefix serial number, indicating the serial number was a duplicate that was accidently applied by Springfield Armory. As noted, this example was probably assembled as a National Match rifle, as its correctly fitted with a "NM" marked barrel, operating rod and correct "YO-1" bolt. Based on the date of the barrel, it could have been a late Type 1 or an early ungraded Type 2; however, it does not come with any documentation. These were all a late, last clean-up effort to expunge Springfield Armory of all M1 rifles and components prior to beginning the M14 production. As noted, the barrel is dated/marked "NM, Star proof, SA F6535446 10-54" with a P proof and the small DOD acceptance proof. It is also correctly marked "NM" on the left front exposed area of the barrel. As noted, it has the correct "YO-1" bolt, and it has a "6528290-SA" trigger housing, a late SA production hammer, and a early NM operating rod marked "7790722-SA". It has a standard wide base gas cylinder, a high hump gas cylinder lock and four slot gas plug. It is fitted with an early NM marked non-hooded rear sight and the "NM/.062" front sight. It is fitted with a new manufacture (non-bedded) walnut stock and standard (non-unitized) front handguard. The left side of the stock is stamped with a current CMP cartouche.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus of the original parkerized finish overall with the full rear underside area of the barrel, underside and top front lug area of the bolt having been completely polished. The right side receiver rail and operating rod slot both show wear and finish loss from actual field use. The replacement stock and hand guards are in as new condition with a very nice all matching medium colored walnut and a clear, sharp CMP cartouche.
