Description:

This is a desirable example of a WWII M1C Garand sniper rifle manufactured by Springfield Armory in January 1945, reconfigured into a U.S.M.C. MC-1 type sniper rifle. During WWII (late 1944-mid 1945) approximately 4,000 M1C sniper rifles were manufactured by Springfield Armory, most were refurbished at the start of the Korean War. Hundreds more were provided to NATO allies in the 1960s and hundreds more destroyed in the 1980/90s. Following the Korean War, the Marine Corps adopted the new/improved Stith Kollmorgen MC-1 4X telescopic sight with the larger Griffin & Howe mount adapted for use on the M1C sniper rifle. The Marines designated these rifles as the "1952 Sniper Rifle" and issued them in limited numbers from 1954 through 1967. All of the verified USMC 1952 MC-1 Sniper Rifles are built using original Springfield Armory Korean War rebuilds such as this rifle. This is a correct late production Griffin & Howe MC-1 type sniper scope mount with a first pattern Stith-Kollmorgen sniper scope. The scope tube is marked "MC 762-P". The objective eye-piece is rolled marked in two lines: "4X DOUBLE/STITH MOUNT S.A.TEX/KOLLMORGEN OPTICAL CORP. BROOKLYN NY." The scope is fitted with the improved, "audible click" windage and elevation knobs and the standard fine cross-hair reticle. The scope has the original blue/black type finish. The scope mount has the original markings: "GRIFFIN & HOWE INC. NEW YORK/PAT. #1.856,549 MAY 3, 1932" and is fitted with the correct "T4" marked scope rings with the later square end locking levers. Standard Springfield Armory receiver markings/3462904. The receiver is fitted with the M1C type scope bracket (base) with three new screws and two new taper pins and is numbered "2904" on the side. The barrel has a single "P" firing proof and it stamped "S A 9 52" with the breech in the white. The rifle retains a mix of WWII and early post-war SA marked parts with a NM marked operating rod, wide base gas cylinder, round top "M" marked gas cylinder lock and a four slot gas plug. It a walnut stock and handguard set, with a restamped boxed "SA/NFR" cartouche and single "P" proof in the grip area. The rifle is fitted with a leather cheekpiece marked "MRT/11-52". This rifle comes with a WWI leather sling and an early milled Hart marked cone type M1C type flash hider.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished with 95% plus of the light gray parkerized finish overall, showing minor handling marks and light edge and high spot wear. The G&H mount retains 95% plus of its darker parkerized finish overall, with the scarce MC-1 scope having 85% plus of its original black finish overall. The optics are clear and sharp with a distinct reticle. The stock and handguard are also in very fine condition with only a couple very minor handling marks with clear and distinct cartouches and proofs.
