Description:

This example is one of approximately 100 experimental M1911A1 pistol produced by the Remington-Rand Company of Syracuse, NY, with the serial number prefix of "ERRS" (Experimental Remington-Rand Series). These pistols were all produced by the Engineering Department of Remington-Rand and were intended to test or prove out various engineering changes prior to any implementation in the production line. They were eventually given away as presentation pieces to employees and dignitaries such as Ordnance Department officers at the end of WWII. The engineering changes actually ranged from different configurations of parts, new and improved manufacturing processes and techniques, to different type of protective finishes depending on the environmental conditions they were trying to improve on. A few of these pistols have surfaced over time and it is theorized that no two are alike. The slide has the standard fixed sights, with a two line address "REMINGTON RAND INC. / SYRACUSE, N.Y. U.S.A." on the left side with serial number "NO. ERRS 66" on the right side of the frame. The serial number was hand stamped which is correct as it was intended as an "internal" factory control/tracking number. There are no other marks, proofs or inspection markings on the pistol. As noted this rare pistol has the very desirable original "Du-Lite" blue/parkerized type finish and is fitted with a High Standard, all blued barrel. The frame is fitted with the a set of original Keyes Fibre, brown checkered plastic grips with large rings around the grip screws with internal reinforcing ribs. The back side of each grip is marked with a "K" inside a star with the mold numbers of "17 and 20" respectively on the back of each grip. It has checkered/stamped trigger, checkered hammer spur, and magazine release button with a serrated thumb safety, slide stop and arched mainspring housing. The pistol is complete with a blued magazine stamped "S" on the lip of the base plate and a Remington-Rand brown shipping box. The box is numbered in pencil along the left edge and is partially covered by the old tape residue. This variation of M1911A1 Semi-Automatic pistol is described on page 60 of the book, "Colt 45 Service Pistols, Model 1911 and 1911A1/Third Edition" by Clawson. Includes an unnumbered Kraft style shipping/storage box.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus with 99% of the original Du-Lite finish overall with 95% plus original blue on the barrel, The only visible wear is some light thinning of the blue over the chamber area probably from light cycling. Grips are excellent plus. Mechanically excellent. The brown cardboard shipping/storage box is authentic, in fine condition with added painters tape in a crossing pattern on exterior. An exceptional all original pistol that would be nearly impossible to upgrade.
