Cased J. Stevens & Co. Pocket Rifle with Scope, Ammunition, and Accessories

This very distinctive "Hunter's Pet" style pocket rifle has a number of unusual features including an unmarked 21 7/8 inch scope in place of the usual sights, a silver-plated frame rather than nickel, a bar and stud on the left side (purpose unknown), and a rather unique leather takedown/bicycle case designed. The consignor states that it is a Cataract scope (there are no visible markings). The Cataract Tool & Optical Company of Buffalo, New York, was later acquired by Stevens in the early 1900s and then sold to Lyman in 1929. The blued barrel has the earlier "J. STEVENS & CO. CHICOPEE FALLS MASS PAT SEPT 8 1864" address and patent marking used before the company changed names to the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. in 1886. The bottom of the barrel has "14" followed by "25-20" and "6" ahead of the frame, and the included nickel-plated matching serialized skeleton shoulder stock, left side of the grip frame, and slotted butt of the frame all have the matching serial number. "3131" also appears to be written inside each grip. A sealed 50 round box of Winchester .25-20 "LESMOK" cartridges and a display stand are also included.

ConditionVery fine overall with 95% plus original blue finish, 90% plus original silver plating remaining and showing natural aged patina and some loss behind the trigger, essentially all of the original nickel on the buttstock which has a modified stock screw with a fixed disk for easier removal, light flaking and dings on the grips which have some nice figure, and general light handling and storage wear. The scope optics are excellent. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine and has mild age and storage related wear.
