Description:

The revolver has the standard Webley-Fosbery markings and features and also has "GM" on the left grip at the butt. These innovative revolvers cock and rotate the cylinder automatically under recoil allowing them to have a rate of fire similar to a semi-automatic pistol while firing more powerful revolver cartridges and retaining the light trigger pull of a single action revolver. As semi-automatic pistols improved and came out in more powerful cartridges like the .45 ACP, these revolvers fell from favor, but as is shown here, remained in use by military men into World War II. The included research letter from Richard Milner indicates the revolver was originally sold on December 12, 1914, to the Army & Navy Co-Operative at 105 Victoria Street in London. They ordered it for Lieutenant Colonel Godfrey Mosley of the 5th Nottingham & Derby Regiment who purchased it on December 5, 1914. It was returned to the factory after World War I and then subsequently sold on May 27, 1940, to Alex B. Johnston of the 913 Squadron of the Royal Air Force at 127 Yardley Road in Acocks Green, Birmingham. Lieutenant Colonel Godfrey Mosley (1863-1945) was a solicitor and public official in Derbyshire and served in the Sherwood Foresters Brigade in the 5th Nottingham & Derby Regiment during World War I and was in command of the 1/5th Battalion until listed as "invalided" due to illness in April 1915. He received the Territorial Decoration, and after the war continued to work as a solicitor and became a magistrate and high sheriff. Nothing was found regarding Alex B. Johnston, but the 913th was a barrage balloon squadron in the Auxiliary Air Force based in Warwickshire. The balloons were connected to the ground by steel cables and thus made it difficult for enemy aircraft to get close to ground targets. A brown leather flap holster marked "HOBSON & SONS/1914/LONDON" on the back and hand-signed "R.H. JESTY" inside is also included.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus arsenal refurbished blue finish, mild wear, light oxidation, and generally crisp markings. The grips are very good and have mostly crisp checkering, some scrapes and dings, mild chipping at the lower edge on the left, and even oiled finish. Mechanically excellent. The holster is very fine and has mild wear.
