Luftwaffe Paratrooper Camouflage Helmet Cover, Modified to Double as a Sniper Mask, as Seen in "German Camouflaged Helmets of The Second World War, Volume II" by Radovic

Designed to fit over the "fallschirmjaegerhelm" paratrooper helmet, this cover is constructed from two pieces of "Splittermuster" pattern single-sided material, which was later modified, likely in the field. A band of herringbone twill cloth is stitched in place around the body, providing a mounting point for local foliage and other items that could enhance the concealment of the cover, and a white cord is provided to adjust the cover to fit the helmet. A significant modification has been made to the crown, where a set of three holes have been cut and some of the excess material folded in and stitched down to create a crude but functional hem, producing a set of eye and mouth holes. This item can be seen in multiple photographs (pages 466-473) of the book "German Camouflaged Helmets of the Second World War, Volume Two" by Branislav Radovic, which discusses the prospect of it having been field modified to act as a sniper face mask, while still being useable as a helmet cover in a pinch. Though no provision is made to strap the mask to the wearer's head, it likely could have been held in position by a helmet or field cap. While a limited number of face masks are known to have been made by the Germans, both in a production sense and as custom items, much of the focus was on areas of extreme cold, with greater emphasis on protection from wind and frost than camouflage, making lightweight "spring" colored examples like this one very unusual.

ConditionFair. Rust spotting is present overall, with some absent sections of the foliage band and tearing concentrated where the cover would contact the brim of the helmet.
