Unique Simson & Co. Prototype Safety Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol Serial Number "A"

This is a unique example of a post WWI Luger pistol that was manufactured by Simson & Co. in Suhl that has a unique prototype side plate/key safety. These prototypes all predated the later small trigger/sear safety usually found on the early post-war Police Lugers. The Luger side plate/sear have always been a very touchy area in that usually any side pressure on the standard trigger sear with allow the pistol to fire. In an attempt to make these more safe, the DWM/Mauser factory developed this split side plate with the elongated cuttout on the upper section that would allow a small key type device to be inserted preventing the pistol from firing. This apparently was discarded in favor of the later sear safety behind the trigger and small spring on top of the side plate. Later that design was also dropped from production. In all other respects this is a standard post war Luger pistol. The chamber is undated with the toggle marked "Simson & Co Suhl." It has a very unusual serial number of only a small "a" on the front of the frame, indicating that this example started out as a new unnumbered Luger frame. Import marked on magazine well. All the remaining parts are also unnumbered, however, almost all of them are stamped with a small "Eagle/6" proof marks indicating it was inspected/marked by the inspector at the Simson & Co factory. It has standard fixed sights with an all blued metal finish with the smaller parts having a straw color. It has the standard checkered walnut grips. It is complete with a tin plated magazine with a wooden base. The unserialized base is stamped with only a single "Crown/Script" letter proof.

ConditionVery fine, with 95% of the original blue finish still remaining overall with the rust blue being mostly on the "main" part of the pistol. The entire barrel and extension has been highly polished and blued, with Imperial proof marks lightly visible on the top rear of the barrel. The smaller parts retain 90% of their original straw colors. The grips are in also in very fine condition with distinct checkering on both sides mixed with some handling marks with the left grip having been lightly refreshened. Certainly a interesting and very unique post WWI prototype luger pistol. Providence from the Dr. Geoffrey Sturgess collection.
