Remington only manufactured an estimated 5,000 Keene magazine rifles between 1880 and 1883. Production was limited due to competition with the Winchester-Hotchkiss rifles, and very few of these rifles are found in excellent condition today due to their use on the frontier. A few hundred were purchased by the U.S. Interior Department to arm the Indian Police, and the Army and Navy also purchased some for field tests. This example is the usual hunter's/sporting rifle variation but has "US" stamped on the buttplate tang and features a blade front sight on the front magazine band, notch and folding ladder rear sight, the three-line address and patent marking on the bolt, and "45/70" on the left side of the frame.

Fine with 60% plus original blue finish, patches of original case colors, gray and brown patina on the balance, some isolated mild oxidation, and general mild wear appropriate to its age and actual use. The stock is very good aside from professionally repaired cracks in the wrist and has mild scratches and pressure marks. Mechanically fine.
