Description:

Only around 100 or less Model 1870 rifles owned by the U.S. Navy were converted for use with .22 rimfire ammunition by Winchester in 1888-1889 for marksmanship practice while onboard ships. It does not have the accepted marks for the .22 conversion (W.W.K. 1889). Aside from the .22 caliber barrel sleeve and breech alterations, it is a standard U.S. Navy Model 1870 rifle and has "P/H.B.R." on left side of barrel, an "ESA" cartouche on the left side of the wrist and the naval anchor stamp on the barrel at the breech. An Ames Mfg. Co. sword bayonet dated "1870" and leather scabbard are also included. The latter has "CF/VT" carved into the leather on the back.

Rating Definition:

Very good as resleeved to .22 rimfire with silver-gray patina on most of the metal, some minor oxidation and pitting, dark oiled finish on the wood, general mild scrapes and dings on the metal and wood, and a few notches and divots. The bayonet is also very good and has mottled gray patina and some light pitting on blade and attractive natural aged patina on the hilt. The scabbard is good and has some mild flex and rub wear, aged patina on the fittings, and minor dents. Mechanically excellent.
