This rifle does not entirely conform to the usual listed Creedmoor or What Cheer rifle variations from c. 1875 into the 1880s but is closest to the Creedmoor Mid-Range aside from the longer barrel and the highly detailed scene of two dogs pursuing a rabbit among some foliage on the left side of the frame rather than a "Mid-Range Creedmoor" inscription. The latter is also not on the top of the receiver ring as is sometimes seen on other panel scene engraved Peabody-Martini rifles. Master Engraver L.D. Nimschke is known to have engraved high end Providence Tool Co. rifles, and a somewhat similar scene is shown on page 79 of "L.D. Nimschke: Firearms Engraver" by Wilson. The rifle also features classic scroll and border engraving, a Providence Tool Co. adjustable windgauge globe front sight with a spirit level, "MANUFACTURED BY THE PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. PROVIDENCE R.I. U.S.A." on top of the octagonal section of the barrel, "40 CAL." on top at the breech (appears to be .40-70 "What Cheer" but not confirmed), "9/R" on the bottom of the barrel at the breech, "PEABODY & MARTINI PATENTS" on the right side of the frame, Vernier peep sight numbered "235" on the ladder, checkered forearm with casehardened Schnabel tip, nicely figured checkered walnut pistol grip stock, and crescent rifle buttplate (marked "110" inside).
