Description:

Manufactured in 1887 with the flat side receiver and chambered for the rarely seen .38 Express caliber. The heavy weight #3 barrel is fitted with a Lyman globe front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The rifle also has a long range tang peep sight. The top barrel flat has the two-line address ahead of the rear sight, "38 EX" at the breech, and "3" on the bottom flat under and ahead of the forearm. The lower tang is marked with the 1879 patent date and serial number. The barrel is blue, and the remaining metal surfaces are casehardened. Mounted with a smooth Schnabel forearm with ebony insert and straight grip stock with crescent buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, #3 30 inch octagon barrel, plain trigger, Lyman sights, that it was received in the warehouse on October 1, 1887 and shipped out October 5, 1887.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 40% of the original the blue finish mixed with numerous light scratches, smooth gray and brown patina. The receiver and lever retain 80% original bright case colors. The buttplate retains 90% muted original case colors. The wood is fine. The stock has been freshened with a coat of varnish. The right front of the forearm shows a small area of mild crazing, and overall there are a few minor dings and dents. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
