Richard K. Miller from the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area began building muzzle loading firearms in 1958 per the Contemporary Longrifle Association and is active in the CLA and the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. The smoothbore barrel is signed "Richard Miller" on top, and the lock is stamped with "RM" and "1999" (inverted) on the inside. The gun has a rounded blade front sight, classic notch rear sight, single trigger, very attractive scroll and floral engraving on the barrel, lock, and brass furniture; small wedge escutcheons that fit flush against the forend molding which terminates in a raised leaf motif carved at the ramrod entry pipe, nicely carved tear drop stock flats, additional raised floral carving at the barrel tang, raised molding along the bottom of the buttstock, a wooden patch box lid, and more complex raised relief carved leaf carving ahead of and behind the cheek piece which has two carved lines on the edge. The patch box contains a worm and jag set.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall as custom made with virtually all of the antiqued blue finish remaining, mostly bright furniture, crisp engraving and carving, light frizzen wear, and faint handling and storage marks. Mechanically excellent.
