Exceptional Quality Engraved and Incised Carved Leroy Fleenor Contemporary Flintlock American Long Rifle

This rifle was built by U.S. Navy veteran Ernest Leroy "Buck" Fleenor (1929-2016) of Bulls Gap, Tennessee; known in the firearms community primarily as Leroy Fleenor. He was one of the members of the "Johnson City School" of gunmakers started by Hacker Martin and worked with Louis Smith. The rifle is signed "Leroy Fleenor" in script on top of the straight barrel which also has a German silver blade front sight, traditional notch rear sight, a steel vent liner, and light engraving. The lock has some light engraving. It is equipped with adjustable double set triggers. The brass furniture is engraved with scrolls, wavy lines, stars, and similar patterns. There are hunter stars for barrel pin escutcheons and on the cheek rest. The side flats have tear drop accents. A pierced wear plate extends from the trigger guard finial to the ramrod entry pipe, and stock also has comb and toe plates. The patch box has two piercings on each side plate and the finial. The patch box has some patches inside. The stock has incised carving at the upper tang, around the side flats, and behind the cheek rest.

ConditionVery fine with a nice antique looking brown finish on the lock and barrel, mild aged patina on the brass furniture and accents, light handling and firing wear, and crisp engraving and signature. The stock is also very fine and has attractive flame figure, smooth oiled finish, crisp incised carving, and only minimal handling and storage type marks. The lock and set triggers function excellently.
