Description:

The lock is marked "1863/L.A.Co." at the front and "crown/V.R" at the rear. British proofs including a "crown/TT/broad arrow" on the barrel at the breech. Overall the rifle shows similar style to the "volunteer style" Pattern 1853 rifles including the checkered forearm and wrist of the stock. This example however was likely presented as a trophy for a marksmanship competition as the buttstock has a silver presentation plaque on the right marked "26th MIDD.x R.V./ No 2. COMPANY/Presented by Captn Pickford./WON BY/Lieutt Irish./1863." This volunteer regiment was made up of Customs & Excise officers working the London docks.

Rating Definition:

Very good, retains traces of original blue in sheltered areas and an attractive antique patina on the silver plaque with the balance a mostly smooth grey patina and some light pitting on the bolster and barrel near the breech. The wood is fine with minor dings and scratches scattered throughout and mostly crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
