Description:

Only 143 Model 1875s were manufactured at the Springfield Armory under a Congressional appropriation of $10,000 for testing. These rifles were designed by James Paris Lee of bolt action rifle fame based upon a modified Martini/Peabody action. Pulling the centrally mounted hammer back locks and cocks the action. When the hammer is pushed forward, the breechblock drops to eject the fired cartridge and allow for reloading. Once the extractor is pushed forward by the cartridge, the breech can close and the hammer can be recocked for another shot. Lee was able to fire 30 rounds in 45 seconds. This rifle has a front sight which acts as the lug for a standard socket bayonet and a rear sight which has a base graduated from 100 to 400 yards and a ladder graduated up to 1,100 yards. The upper tang is stamped "U.S." above "PAT. MAR. 16. 1875". It has two "U" marked barrel bands. The front band has stacking sling swivels, and the trigger guard has a single swivel through the front. The smooth straight grip stock is stamped with Master Armorer Erskine S. Allin's script "ESA" cartouche on the left side ahead of the wrist and a "B" and circled script "P" stamped behind the trigger guard. The buttplate is stamped "US" on the tang.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with 90% plus of the original blue finish, minor scratches and dings visible on the excellent stock, crisp markings, and generally only light storage wear. Mechanically excellent.
