Description:

The Hotchkiss bolt actions were designed by Benjamin Hotchkiss who sold the rights to Winchester in 1877. This example is a First Model style Hotchkiss carbine in the second model serial range that was manufactured circa 1881. We've seen another in this range, 11895, that was in First Model configuration as well and also had a number stamped on the top of the comb. The Hotchkiss series was Winchester's first foray into bolt action firearms, and the first Winchester to use a magazine tube in the buttstock. It was also the first repeating centerfire bolt action rifle used by any military. This example is a civilian model given it has no inspection marks or cartouches. The safety and turn button magazine cut-off is located on the right side. The left side of the stock has the saddle ring, and the left receiver wall has the three line address/patent dates marking. The serial number is marked on the top left edge of the receiver. It is equipped with a pinned blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards with a ski jump base. It has a smooth straight grip stock with a single barrel band, carbine style buttplate, and "7" stamped on the top of the comb.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 40% plus original blue finish, brown patina on the balance, oxidation and pitting concentrated on the buttplate, and general mild wear. The stock is very good has smooth oiled finish, light scratches and dings, and minor flaking. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The John Fox Collection.
