Description:

This "sword" was passed down through the direct family line of Major General Frederick Dent Grant, son of Union General and President of the United States Ulysses S. Grant. Although this looks like a sheathed Model 1902 Army Officers' Saber it is actually a scabbard with a hilt fitted at the top and has no blade. The scabbard itself has a small button on the inside and comes apart into two sections which would have made it easier to store. It is marked "470" on the upper section where the two pieces meet. This is the only piece like it that we have seen and information on this variation is lacking. It has a horn grip and is inscribed "F.D. GRANT 1911" on the back strap. The included copy of a "Certificate of Provenance and Authenticity" from John G. Griffiths, great-great-grandson of Frederick Grant, indicates it remained in the Grant family until it was sold in early 2020. He listed it as an "Unusual collapsible Model 1902 officer's sword and scabbard." It also includes a canvas sword cover. Frederick Dent Grant (1850-1912) was General Ulysses S. Grant's eldest son, graduated from West Point in 1871, served in the Army in the West during much of the 1870s and again in the late 1890s and early 20th century during the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection and also served as U.S. Minister to Austria, a New York police commissioner, Military Governor of Pampanga in 1899-1900. He promoted to major general in 1906 and served as the commander of the Eastern Division from its establishment on July 1, 1911, until his death on April 12, 1912. This "sword" may have been presented when he took his last command.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with minor handling and storage wear including light scratches. The canvas cover has a tan appearance and mild wear from age and storage.
