Description:

Whilst little appears to be recorded for the company of Marsey & Silliver, another large bore percussion rifle signed by these makers is retained in the collections of the Royal Armouries, Leeds (object No. XII.3796). This immense rifle has a browned octagonal damascus barrel with matted top flat signed towards the breech “MARSEY & SILLIVER” within geometric patterned borders, fitted with a blued rear express sight of four folding leaves each with platinum inlaid center line and graduated from “100” to “400” yards, the forward section of the barrel with single silver inlaid groove with disc finial marked “RAWBONES PATENT” (W.G. Rawbone, Patent No. 25530, September 15, 1862), and beaded blade front sight. The underside of the barrel struck with Birmingham proof marks, the left side of the barrel struck with Indian registration marks. Casehardened patent breech inlaid with two gold lines on the top surface. Casehardened standing breech with long top strap, detented side lock signed “MARSEY & SILLIVER” and with safety catch, and furniture including scrolled pistol grip trigger guard and large hinged patch box cover. Border and scroll engraved throughout. Figured straight hand half stock with checkered grip and forearm. Brass mounted cane ramrod with worm. With modern wooden fitted case lined in purple velvet with accessories including Hawksley nickel topped rifle powder flask with adjustable nozzle and brown leather covered body, wad cutting punch, mainspring clamp and modern ball mold, and a comprehensive suite of matching ivory handled tools, pots, and loading mallet. A copy of a purchase receipt from Holland & Holland, London, dated 15 October, 1982, accompanies this rifle and confirms this rifle as having come from the Armory of the Nizam of Hyderbad. The armory had been purchased in the late 1970s in a joint venture between Westley Richards and Holland & Holland.

Rating Definition:

Barrel expertly rebrowned, engraving clear, and retaining near 100% finish. Breech, standing breech, lock and furniture each with traces of original casehardened finish, the remainder a grey patina. The engraving is crisp and clear throughout. Stock has been professionally refinished with some scattered minor storage blemishes and sharp checkering. The case is in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
