Fine Panel Game Scene Engraved T.E. Mortimer, Edinburgh Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun with Case

Thomas Elsworth Mortimer, a member of the famous British gunmaking dynasty, established himself in London and Edinburgh until 1835 when he moved his business in its entirety to Edinburgh. With the rib signature alluding to no longer having premises on St. James Street in London we can date this shotgun to circa 1835-40 and the beginning of his business solely based in Scotland. With browned damascus barrels with sunken concave rib bearing a bead front sight and signed “T.E. MORTIMER EDINBURGH LATE ST. JAMES ST. LONDON” and numbered “1” of a pair. The underside of the barrels each struck with London proof marks and maker’s marks “TEM” and “JT”. Serial numbered patent breeches each with platinum plug and engraved with a panel of foliage on the rib section. Scroll engraved standing breech and border and scroll engraved bar-in-wood locks each signed “T.E. MORTIMER” and engraved with a differing game scene involving dogs and game birds. Light colored well figured straight hand walnut half stock with checkered grip and forearm. Iron mounts engraved en suite with the locks and standing breech including trigger guard engraved with a further game scene on the bow. With brass mounted ramrod with worm. In two tone pigskin lined fitted oak case with John Dickson & Son printed trade label which has an owner’s label bearing a crest and motto pasted in the middle, with accessories including brass powder flask with foliate design, leather shot flask, various turnscrews and tools, and a large brass percussion cap dispenser. A note in the case details that this gun along with serial no. 5974 were made as a pair for a Major Ferguson in “1850 ish”.

ConditionThe barrels of this classic Scottish double percussion shotgun retain 98% rebrowned finish and display a clear damascus pattern, the rib signature is crisp. There is some corrosion marking around each percussion pillar from cap detonation. The standing breech, locks and mounts are cleaned bright. The engraving to the standing breech and locks is crisp and clear, the engraving to the trigger guard is softened and worn on the tang of the butt plate. The stock has been refinished and the checkering refreshed. The case has numerous storage and handling marks to the exterior and two cracks in the rear corners of the lid. Accessories showing signs of wear through use and handling. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
