Scarce and Desirable U.S.A.F. Smith & Wesson Lightweight M13 Aircrewman Double Action Revolver with Holster

This is a solid representative example of a scarce late production second model USAF M13 Aircrewman DA revolver. These generally fall into two versions: early and late models with this example being a late model. This example was manufactured circa 1954, produced on government contract for the U.S. Air Force. They were intended for use by Strategic Bomber Crews for use as a survival weapon. Weight conscience, they were originally produced with a lightweight alloy frame and cylinder with a steel barrel. The model was rejected in the 50s because of problems with the alloy cylinder with most were destroyed by the government or S&W. The top strap is roll marked "REVOLVER, LIGHTWEIGHT, M13," the left side of the frame is stamped with the letter "P," and the back strap is roll marked "PROPERTY OF U.S. AIR FORCE". The butt of the frame is serial numbered C279163, and the rear of the cylinder and underside of the barrel are numbered "279163". The frame and crane have matching assembly numbers of "11372". The right grip panel is numbered matching to the pistol, and the left side is unnumbered. Included with this lot is an earlier production "US" embossed brown leather shoulder holster that is not correct for this model of revolver. The back side has been hand marked "G.L.M."

ConditionFine with 70% of the original black anodized finish overall with thinning on the edges and high spots with finish loss on the front edges of the cylinder with general light thinning overall, especially on the trigger guard bow and rear grip strap. The grips are very good with sharp checkering on the sides with light finish loss from handling and firing. The holster is in very good condition overall with a nice medium brown color, with tight stitching and clear markings on the front and back. The shoulder strap is in good condition showing age and usage.
