Description:

This pair of pistols won one of ten possible awards for weapons of "outstanding historical value, or beauty, or rarity" displayed at the 95th National Rifle Association Annual Meetings in April 1966 in Chicago. The silver medal and "Certificate of Recognition" from the NRA to influential collector Karl Moldenhauer are included. The pair is illustrated in their case twice in "The Karl F. Moldenhauer Collection of Remington Arms" from 1980 and identified as an "ORIGINAL PRESENTATION PAIR OF REMINGTON MODEL 1867 PISTOLS" (one in color as the catalog's front piece) and described as: "Fully deluxe engraved overall with scroll patterns, with silver-plated barrels, gold-plated frames, and blued actions, fitted with original ivory stocks. In their original deluxe rosewood case (15-5/8 x 9 3/4 x 2 1/2 inches) with fancy brass shield escutcheon in lid, the interior lined with red velvet and fitted with a large block drilled to hold cartridges, all of which are present . . .Mr. Moldenhauer always referred to this set as the "Gold Dust Twins." A copy of that catalog is included. They are also shown and discussed on page 143 of "Remington Rolling Block Pistols" by Landskron where they are noted as attributed to legendary 19th century Master Engraved L.D. Nimschke. Landskron also states that "photos just do not do justice to the beauty of this cased pair." The "Nimschke stars" on the frame rings, the style of the scroll engraving with punch-dot shading in the middle on the sides of the barrels and the frame, and the entwining lines on the back straps and trigger guards are similar to the patterns shown/pulled from rolling block pistols pictured on pages xxii and 24-25 of "L.D. Nimschke: Firearms Engraver" by Wilson. The stars on the hammers and top and bottom of the frames by the hammers are interesting and distinctive inclusions. There are also attractive bands engraved at the muzzle and breech on the barrels. They also feature the "pinched" blade front sights, notch rear sights built into the breech blocks, "REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A./PAT MAY 3D NOV 15TH 1864 APRIL 17TH1866" on the left side of the frames, and "KM-3" collection markings in white under a clear coating on the front straps (should be easy to remove if one wanted to). The attractive rosewood case contains the pistols, 64 cartridges, and the NRA medal. Similar cases are known with other high end Remington Rolling Block pistol sets.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with fading of the gilt finish on the frame revealing the silver backing, 90% original bright blue finish on the smaller parts, 30% original silver on the barrel, crisp engraving and markings, and light age related wear throughout. The forearm and grip are also very fine and have attractive natural tones and grain, slight age cracks, and minor handling wear. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good and has mild age and storage related wear such as some light scratches and dings, fading and contact wear on the lining, and thin cracks on the refinished exterior. The scarce ammunition is also very good and has mild wear from age such as white oxide on the bullets.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with the gilt finish on the frame fading mainly along the grip straps and exposing the silver backing, 90% original bright blue finish on the smaller parts, 70% original silver on the barrel, crisp engraving and markings, and light age related wear throughout. The forearm and grip are also very fine and have very nice grain and natural tones, the usual slight age cracks, and minor handling wear. Mechanically excellent. This is an outstanding set and is sure to add a lot of interest and value to any collection of American firearms, especially a Remington collection.
