Fine Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letter

The accompanying factory letter list this carbine as having been received in the warehouse on August 27, 1883 and shipped on April 19, 1886. The barrel is stamped with the two-line Winchester address/King's patent dates legend ahead of the rear sight. The serial number is in script on the lower tang behind the lever catch. It has a set of carbine sights, a bolt that retains its original rimfire firing pin, a saddle ring stud with ring mounted on the left side of the brass receiver and a carbine stock with trapdoor casehardened iron buttplate. A three piece cleaning rod is included. Model 1866s have always been extremely popular with collectors with most having seen heavy use on the Western frontier due to their rapid fire nature and improved Henry rifle design.

ConditionFine, retaining 70% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. 20% original niter blue remains on the loading gate. 40% original case colors remain on the hammer and buttplate, and traces of original case colors remain on the lever. The brass receiver has an attractive appearance with tight fitting side plates. The wood is also fine with a couple chips and filled chip at the tangs and minor-moderate dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
