Description:

51,389 Model 1868 Trapdoor Rifles were manufactured in 1868-1872. This "1869" dated rifle has the standard markings and features and has a very interesting period repaired stock. The buttstock has screws, staples, and nails securing six layers of leather which fill in the left side of the butt where the stock was broken. This would have kept the rifle in service longer. There is also a screw in the stock to the right of the trigger. Repairs like this are generally associated with frontiersmen and Native Americans in the West where keeping available firearms serviceable often required clever use of available materials rather than "cleaner" repairs that might be executed by a gunsmith in a town or city.

Rating Definition:

Good as repaired, modified and used in faithful service on the frontier with the wounds to match. The stock is fair with the noted interesting repairs. Mechanically fine. A wonderful and color piece of frontier history with authenticity that can not be duplicated or reproduced. What a piece of Americana!!
