Sharps-Borchardt Model 1878 Single Shot Rifle with L. N. Mogg Scope

Only 8,700 Model 1878 rifles were manufactured in c. 1878-1881. They were based on designs by Hugo Borchardt. It is equipped with a 34 1/4 inch scope marked "L.N. MOGG/MARCELLUS, N.Y." near the rear, and the scope mounts have built in blade and groove sights. L. N. Mogg was active in the late 19th and early 20th century as a marksman and scope maker among other business interests. Advertisements and raving reviews for his scopes were found from 1900-1904. The barrel has the standard "Old Reliable" and Bridgeport address markings on top and "CAL. 40 2 1/2" on the left side near the breech. The frame has "BORCHARDT PATENT./SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT CONN./U.S.A./18315/PAT. DEC. 1876." on the left side. The pistol grip stock and Schnabel tip forearm are fancy grade walnut with very attractive figure, multi-point checkering, and a checkered hard rubber buttplate embossed with a "SRCo" monogram.

ConditionVery fine with 85% plus original blue finish on the barrel, 20% original casehardened finish, silver-gray patina on the balance of the frame, plum color on the scope body, mild edge wear, and minor dings and scratches. The wood is good and has some repaired hairline cracks visible in the forend tip and recheckered wrist, very attractive figure, smooth oiled finish, aged chocolate color on the buttplate, and some small dings. The scope optics are very good, and the action is mechanically excellent.
