Exceedingly Rare Third Model Collier R evolving Percussion shotgun, marked "Edwards Maker, Collier’s Patent"

Circa 1824-1827. For advanced collectors of early American repeating firearms, the 1818 Collier revolver stands at the pinnacle of desirability. The Collier was the first percussion revolver ever made. Much of Colt’s historic lawsuits of 1851 and 1852 centered around Collier having achieved cylinder rotation by drawing back the cock. Approximately 80 Colliers are known today and there is no serial number higher than 243, indicating around 250 were built. This Third Model Collier has correct internal numbers of ‘192’, that is consistent with the other known “E.H. Collier Patent” Third Model shotguns numbered 181, 190 and 197. The design was patented by Artemas Wheeler of Concord and Bostonians Elisha Haydon Collier and Cornelius Coolidge. Wheeler patented the design in the United States of America on June 10, 1818, Collier patented an improvement of the design in Great Britain on November 24, 1818, and Coolidge translated Collier's patent for a French Brevete (patent) on August 5, 1819. "Collier & Co., Gunmakers" had a London premises between 1818-1827, where he sold variations of the design in the form of bespoke pistols, rifles, shotguns and carbines. At the closure of his business, Collier presumably sold his remaining unengraved guns under license. Thus, the rib of this firearm is marked "EDWARDS MAKER, COLLIER'S PATENT." The 28 1/8” barrel (24 bore at muzzle) is marked with ‘29’ between the London proof and view marks. Two Colliers marked ‘Edwards’ are known, the other is a rifle in the Royal Armories Study Collection (Object Number: XII.3414). A Collier by Edwards is referenced in Clay Bedford’s iconic essay, "Collier and His Revolvers" published in the 1971 Bulletin of The American Society of Arms Collectors. As is standard on Second and Third Model Colliers, the cylinder is manually rotated, after drawing it backwards against a spring. The concave rib has a bead front sight. The lively engraving consists of tight floral scroll and border designs, in the English style. The stock has a checkered wrist and a blank silver wrist escutcheon.

ConditionVery fine with 85% plus period refurbished brown finish and distinct Damascus twist patterns along the barrel that has partially faded proofs. 70% refurbished case colors remain on the lock and cylinder as well as the frame and side plates. 20% blue remains on the trigger guard. There is smooth brown and gray patina on the faded areas, generally distinct engraving, mild overall wear such as light dings and marks, and crisp recut barrel marking (cut through the finish). The revarnished stock is fine and has crisp checkering, moderate scrapes and dings, some darker areas, and a few tiny chips such as at the rod at the toe. Mechanically fine. It is a very attractive and exceedingly rare firearm. This revolving shotgun would substantiate a revolving arms collection that specializes in 19th Century American and British firearms.
