Description:

The Colt Model 1860 Army was the primary handgun of the Union Army during the Civil War. Over 125,000 were delivered before the famous fire at the Colt factory in February 1864. This one was manufactured in 1863 under contract with the U.S. Ordnance Department. The three screw frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side and is cut for a shoulder stock. The barrel has the one-line "NEW-YORK" address. The cylinder has the standard patent markings and naval scene. A script letter cartouche is stamped on each side of the grip. Matching full or partial serial numbers are on the frame, barrel, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, wedge and cylinder pin.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. 60% original blue finish remains on the barrel, 50% original blue finish remains on the back strap and traces of blue remain on the cylinder with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. The barrel has a couple patches of spotting. Nearly all of the cylinder scene remains. The hammer and frame retain 85% original vivid case colors and traces of original case colors remain on the loading lever. The brass front strap has an attractive appearance. The grip is very fine with "H" hand marked on the bottom and minimal minor handling marks. The cartouches are clear. Mechanically excellent. A solid original example of the Union's primary Civil War handgun.
