Description:

Manufactured c. 1820-1840 in the mounted artillery officer's pattern with no visible maker's marks. A similar example pictured on p. 135 of "American Swords" by Flayderman and Mowbray is listed as "AW SPIES" marked. The curved blade is approximately 30 inches long with the lower half of each side finely etched, blued and gilded, showing floral motifs and a stand of arms with the shield from the great seal. Gilded brass birds's head hilt with spiraled D-guard, starburst marked languets, and spiral fluted bone grip. Includes the gilded brass scabbard engraved with floral and patriotic eagle motifs.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, the excellent blade showing mostly bright with some scattered light spotting and retaining most of the original blue and gilded finish. The hilt shows mostly an attractive antique patina on the brass with traces of the original gilding and a hairline crack and moderate chip in the grip. The guard is loose. The scabbard shows mostly an attractive antique patina on the brass with faint traces of the original gilding in sheltered areas.
