Description:

Patterned after British officer's swords such as the Pattern 1822 and Pattern 1845 infantry officer's swords, this sword was manufactured by Clauberg of Solingen, Prussia around the time of the Civil War. Swords such as this were very popular private purchase items among officers on both sides of the American conflict. The very slightly curved blade is approximately 32 1/2 inches long, gilt etchings running about half the length which feature stands of arms, "U.S.", eagle and shield, and representations of Artemis and Justice just above the ricassos which are marked "W/CLAUBERG/knight/SOLINGEN" and with inset "PROVED/+". The spine features a gilt leafy vine and "IRON PROOF". The iron openwork guard features floral scroll and the pommel is of the Phrygian helmet style. The grip is wire-wrapped black shark skin. The iron scabbard has two hanging rings and a drag.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, the excellent blade showing mostly bright with some spotting, a few scattered patches of light pitting, and most of the original gilding visible amongst the etching. The guard and pommel are mostly a smooth grey patina mottled with some brown. The grip is complete with some light wear. The scabbard shows mostly a smooth brown patina with some scattered light pitting.
