Description:

This is a well made copy of a U.S. Model 1841 style Coehorn mortar. Coehorn mortars were invented by Dutch military engineer Menno van Coehoorn at the beginning of the 18th century and remained little changed by the time of the Civil War. They were small and thus readily man-portable using as few as two men and could be used from within forward trenches during siege operations. There are no visible markings with the metal finished with black enamel and the bed with olive green enamel. The bore measures approximately 2 3/4 inches (approximately 12 pound shot) and is approximately 11 inches deep. The bed is approximately 24 inches long and 13 3/4 inches wide and is constructed from four think planks with two iron carry handles on each side.

Rating Definition:

Very good as custom made, retains most of the black and olive enamels with some scattered mild flaking exposing a brown patina on the metal, loose front bolt on the right cap-square, and mild wear and handling marks on the bed.
