Simeon North Model 1816 Flintlock Pistol with Extra Lock

The pistol and extra lock are likely pictured as part of "The Simeon North Collection of Guns" (third from the top and bottom right respectively) donated by North's great-grandson Ralph H. North to The Franklin Institute and shown in the 1944 article "The Origin of Interchangeable Parts" by Thomas Coulson, Director of Museum Research at The Franklin Institute. North was co-author of "Simeon North: First Official Pistol Maker of the United States." The two locks would have originally been interchangeable, a feat first guaranteed by North on the Model 1813 just a few years earlier. The double strap barrel band has a brass blade front sight. The barrel has "P" and "US" on the left at the breech. The locks have "S. NORTH/U[eagle]S/MIDLN CON." (faint on the extra lock) at center. The stock has a faint outline of a cartouche on the left. A hickory ramrod is fitted beneath the barrel.

ConditionVery good with dark lacquer applied to the browned barrel and furniture, gray patina and mild pitting on the locks, general mild wear, re-oiled stock with a tension crack on the left at the rear lock screw, and minor flaking at the edges. Both locks have replaced cocks, and the extra lock also has a replaced mainspring and will not fit in the pistol. Both are mechanically fine. Provenance: Ralph H. North, great-grandson of Simeon North, and The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.
