Description:

From the late 1880s to the early 1900s self-described “American multinational luxury jewelry and specialty retailer” Tiffany & Co. advertised some of the period’s most spectacular and expensive highly embellished weaponry for America’s leading firearms manufacturers. “Revolvers of the most improved types, mounted in silver, carved ivory, gold, etc. with rich and elaborate decorations,” proclaimed the Tiffany Blue Book catalog, would set a customer back $50.00 to $300.00. These high art firearms are the epitome of the Art Nouveau movement, and many were showcased at the then widely popular international exhibitions such as the World's Columbian Expedition of 1893 held in Chicago. Offered here is a stunning sterling silver grip Tiffany & Co. made for a Smith & Wesson Baby Russian revolver. Once mounted to the gun, the grip would cover the frame and recoil shield and attach at the front of the frame. The area behind the recoil shield features an etched floral pattern consisting of vines, leaves, and blossoms. The grip area has a wonderful etched Damascus pattern. The grip is complete with a sterling silver panel marked ""TIFFANY/10079/M/7857/STERLING" designed to be mounted under the frame.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The silver has an attractive age darkened appearance. There is a slight bend to the left mounting arm. Nearly all of the etched Damascus pattern remains. The floral patterns are crisp. A great work of art by Tiffany when artistry and weaponry collided in the late 19th century. Writer has never seen one of these loose!
