Nimschke New York Panel Scene Engraved Early Production Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 "Old Army" Revolver with Relief Carved Mexican Eagle Grips and Case

Manufactured circa 1863 (the fourth digit in the serial number is illegible) and featuring a highly desirable and rare L.D. Nimschke New York panel scene engraving. Masterful scrollwork on a matte background indicative of work by Nimschke is profusely featured on the frame, barrel and back strap. The left side of the frame has a panel scene depicting a hunting dog and a brace of rabbits. A matching scroll engraving along with a panel scene depicting a horseback rider is featured on the cylinder. These are amazing panel scenes full of detail, and the attention to detail is similarly captured in other scenes documented in a collection of Nimschke's pulls gathered by R.L. Wilson in "L.D. Nimschke Firearms Engraver." The barrel rib has the one-line address, and the cylinder has the patent dates marking. The top strap has three pins. Matching assembly marks are on the grip frame, cylinder and barrel. The left grip panel has a relief carved Mexican eagle, and the right panel has the number "10533" on the back. Comes with a period partitioned case and an empty incredibly rare green label Crittenden & Tibbals box of .32 RF cartridges.

ConditionVery fine. The barrel and frame retaining 95% original blue finish with the grip straps thinning to blue gray and high edge wear. The cylinder retains traces of original blue. The engraving is crisp. Vibrant original case colors remain on the hammer. The grips are excellent with minimal handling marks, crisp carving and attractive color and grain. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with minor handling/storage marks and high spot wear on the lining. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
