Description:

Manufactured from 1879 to 1887, the Model 320 revolving rifle is one of the rarest Smith & Wesson firearms produced with a total production of 977. These firearms were serial numbered from 1 to 977, and out of the 977 manufactured, 514 had the 18 inch barrel. Only 840 of these were sold in the U.S. and the remaining 137 were exported. Sometimes referred to as the Smith & Wesson "Buntline Special" with the combination of a long barreled revolver and attaching shoulder stock, the Model 320 was manufactured using the frame, cylinder and basic action of the New Model No. 3 revolver with some minor differences in the hammer and trigger and the barrel being made of two pieces. The 18 inch barrel has a blade front sight, two leaf rear sight and two-line address/patent dates marking highlighted in white. Matching serial numbers are on the butt, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. The forearm and grips are mottled red hard rubber and feature the S&W monogram. The stock is smooth walnut with blued attaching hardware and a hard rubber buttplate with S&W monogram.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 90% original blue finish with speckling of brown patina on the balance. 97% original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger guard. The forearm and grips are excellent with minimal handling marks and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. The stock is very good with the attaching hardware retaining 60% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina and the replacement wood showing limited handling marks. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
