Description:

Manufactured from 1878 to 1892. This example features near full coverage Gustave Young engraving consisting of his characteristic Germanic scroll patterns and scalloped border designs. The latter extend to the sides and back of the hammer. A very attractive period embellishment from renowned S&W engraver Gustave Young. The barrel rib has the two-line address/patent dates, and the top strap has the additional patent dates marking. This is an early model as identified by the absence of a strain screw on the front strap. Instead, these early models were built with a strain screw for the mainspring under the grips. Matching serial numbers are on the butt, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with a 3 1/2 inch barrel, blue finish, factory engraving, and pearl grips when shipped on May 11, 1878 and delivered to J.P. Lowell Arms Co., Boston, MA. S&W historian Roy Jinks states in the letter that the revolver was engraved by Gustav Young.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 85% plus original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The engraving is crisp. Nearly all original case colors remain on the hammer. The grips are excellent with minimal handling marks and attractive fiery colors. The cylinder does not lock, otherwise action is fine. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
