Important Experimental Smith & Wesson Model Number 1 1/2 Revolver

Offered here is an experimental variation to S&W's highly successful Model Number 1 1/2 revolver series, one of two currently known to exist, the other example is in a European collection. It is similar in appearance to the 1 1/2, 2nd Issue such as the single action tip-up frame, birds head grip, fluted cylinder, spur trigger and round ribbed barrel. Here are where the similarities end as the revolver has a 4 1/2 inch barrel which is longer than the standard 3 1/2 inch barrel, a wider profile birds head grip frame which allows for more surface area for the operator's hand to grasp, and a 6-shot cylinder instead of the standard 5-shot cylinder for additional firepower. It is therefore reasonable to conclude that this experimental arm tested the feasibility of a larger sized variation to S&W's first medium size cartridge revolver. The serial number "855" is on the butt. Assembly number "66" is found on the grip frame, rear cylinder face and in pencil on both grip panels. The right grip panel is also stamped with the number "65855." The front cylinder face has the assembly marking "I 10." The barrel has the assembly marking "Q8." The barrel rib is stamped "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS," the standard legend used on 1 1/2s.

ConditionFine. The barrel and cylinder retain 40% original blue finish and the frame retains 80% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. A collector number is marked on a spot of varnish located on the back strap. Traces of faded original case colors remain on the hammer. The grips are very good with a couple tiny chips near the butt and a number of minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. A S&W collection, no matter how advanced, cannot be considered complete with out this experimental Model Number 1 1/2 revolver. It certainly is a must have for the serious S&W collector! Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
