Unusual Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 "Old Army" Percussion Converted Revolver

Offered here is a highly unusual, post-Civil War manufactured S&W Model No. 2 revolver converted to percussion. The high quality craftsmanship and left in the white barrel are indications that this conversion was done at the S&W factory. The conversion features a standard Model No. 2 frame and barrel, a cut down Model No. 2 cylinder set forward in the frame, a conversion block mounted to the frame behind the cylinder, a loading channel on the right side of the frame, and a single percussion nipple inside the hammer well which is stuck by the front face of the hammer. The hammer retains its original rimfire firing pin. The cylinder is stamped with the one-line 1855, 1859, and 1860 patent dates marking along with "R. WHITE'S/PATENT." The barrel has the one-line S&W address marking and provision for an ejector stud (not included). Truth be told the purpose for this conversion alludes us. The single percussion nipple makes for a clumsy design with a slow rate of fire and the revolver, which was originally chambered for the then relatively new rimfire metallic cartridge, reverts to a percussion ignition design that had become obsolete when the conversion was done after the Civil War.

ConditionVery good plus. The cylinder and frame retain 40% original blue finish with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The left in the white barrel has an aged appearance and typical handling marks of a tool room piece. There are a few scattered patches of pitting. The grips are also very good with minor handling marks and half of the original varnish remaining. The cylinder does not lock, otherwise the action is fine. A highly unusual Model No. 2 that will bring added dimension to any S&W collection. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
