Description:

It is signed "Carl Stifel" (right lock and top of left barrel) and "in Gaildorf" (left lock and top of right barrel). The barrel signatures are in silver inlay and accented by coordinating inlaid scrollwork and an arrow on the rib. The locks have border and floral engraving. The breech plate is lightly engraved with oak leaves and acorns. The furniture is brass with scrolling pattern finials. The stock has an inlaid mother of pearl rhombus surrounded by silver pins on the forend, mother of pearl hearts on the checkered wrist as well as silver pin borders, a horn and staghorn on the cheek piece, and an unknown absent inlay on the left side of the butt (similar outline as a trinity knot). Sling swivel eyes are on the bottom of the ramrod pipe and the butt.

Rating Definition:

Good with mostly smooth brown patina on the exposed portions of the barrels, minor pitting concentrated at the breech, mottled gray patina on the locks, aged patina on the brass and silver, and mild overall wear. The ramrod pipe appears to have been re-soldered. The stock is fair with smoothed checkering, some minor cracks, the noted absent inlay, and minor scratches and dings. The right lock needs a new mainspring, but the left is mechanically fine.
