Included with this pistol is a 1978 dated letter from Arnold M. Chernoff, noted antique arms collector and expert, which discusses this item. According to Chernoff, this revolver was the work or concept of Walter Winans, noted firearms writer and two-time Olympic shooting medalist, who proposed a single action version of the arm for issue as a police sidearm. Colt chose to go an different direction, with double action operation becoming the de-facto standard for American combat/defensive revolvers, and the New Police itself would be retired in favor of the Police Positive in 1907. Chernoff further attributes the arm to the Hagemann Collection. Blade front and notch rear sights, with the three-line address on top of the barrel, "COLT NEW POLICE 32" on the left, and the Rampant Colt surrounded by "+COLT+/NEW POLICE" on the left side plate. The hammer and trigger are finished in a bright niter blue, with the former finely knurled and the latter adjusted to significantly reduce the reset distance. As configured, the operation of the revolver is very smooth and rapid. Fitted with a pair of checkered "COLT" banner grips, which are hand-numbered "549" on the interior; this is the only serial number present on the revolver. Also included is a Colt "black box", with a number of hand markings added and erased from the bottom, a period-appropriate black-on-blue end label, a black-on-white lid label which notes the revolver is not configured for smokeless powder, proper internal lid label, a bore brush and a small alloy hanging tag marked "Ex.", likely to denote "experimental".
