Description:

Only an estimated 1,800 Remington metallic cartridge cane guns were manufactured in the 1860s to 1880s. The original design was patented by Remington's master mechanic John F. Thomas in 1858. The Remington cane guns have the distinction of being the first metallic cartridge long arm produced by Remington. Remington was also the only major U.S. manufacturer to produce cane guns. Cane guns and swords were popular with European gentlemen in the 19th century. Canes were considered an essential part of a gentleman's wardrobe in the Victorian Era. Due to the increase in street crime in both European and American cities, the need for a defensive weapon while still wanting to look sharp helped promote the production of these weapons. Shotgun versions of cane guns were also used for opportunistic hunting while walking on country estates. Remington advertised "The Remington Rifle Cane" as "Just the Thing for Taxidermists" and as "Protection against Dogs and Highwaymen." This example is one of the .22 rimfire versions. The overall length of the cane is 33 1/2 inches. It is equipped with an ornate aftermarket handle with floral designs and silver-gilt finish (gold backed by silver) and an aftermarket longer brass tip.

Rating Definition:

Fair with 40% silver/gold finish on the period replaced handle, lighter gray patina on the balance of the handle, dark aged patina on the brass, dark coloration on the gutta percha along with some stabilized cracks at the top, and general mild wear. This is a very attractive and rare Remington firearm. The company's cane guns are among their most popular products with collectors and different variations are hard to come by.
