Description:

This classic 19th century double rifle was made in the shop of Henry Tatham Jr. (1804-1860) in London. It has matching serial numbers on the barrels, breech hooks, forend, lower tang, and bottom of the butt. The three-groove rifled barrels have a wide rib with a dovetailed blade front sight, notch and folding ladder rear sight with platinum sight lines and graduations out to 1,000 yards, and "TATHAM, 37 CHARING CROSS, LONDON." The bottom of the barrels have London proofs and "24" bore markings. The breeches have scroll and border engraving and platinum plugs. The locks are signed "HENRY TATHAM/LONDON" and have additional scroll and border engraving as do the ramrod entry pipe, wedge escutcheons, trigger guard, and buttplate. The stock has a checkered wrist, silver wrist escutcheon, and smooth buttplate. The takedown case has a Tatham trade label and a variety of accessories, including a matching numbered bullet mold also marked "J.G," a ball mold, leather sling, and Sykes powder flask.

Rating Definition:

Fine with half of the faded brown finish and attractive twist patterns, bright locks and furniture, some gray and brown patina, minor oxidation and pitting mainly on the buttplate, and minor overall wear. The refinished stock has crisp checkering, mild scratches, and a few dents. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine and has moderate age and storage related wear including a cracked lid. The accessories are generally fine or better with aged patina on the brass components.
