Description:

This is an example of a U.S. Army contract M1911A1 pistol that was manufactured by Colt in 1940. In this block of serial numbers Colt produced approximately 2468 pistols in total and they exhibited excellent workmanship with many of the early features. The left side of the frame is marked "CSR" for Major Charles S. Reed, the inspector at Colt's facility. Below that is a "P" proof by the magazine catch, the right side of the frame is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" over "No 720650". The front end is marked "M1911A1 US ARMY". The top of the frame is marked C.S.R. next to a "G" indicating a Government contract pistol. The slide is the correct early version with the two-block, two-line patent/address on the left side with the Rampant Colt in the middle of the marking and the correct "P" proof on top in front of the rear sight. It has the matching serial number under the firing pin stop. It has the early checkered slide stop, thumb safety, and checkered main spring housing with a lanyard ring on the butt. The magazine is half tone, unmarked and the grips are checkered walnut. The pistol is also accompanied by a letter from Springfield Research Service, indicating that the pistol was shipped to the U.S. navy, NAV OP Base, Norfolk, VA on 01-08-41. This data was found in General Order 42, Record Group 74, U.S. Archive, Washington, DC.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus of the slightly faded original blue finish. The front strap has a brownish patina and there is extensive scattered light specks of pitting overall. The grips are fine. Mechanically excellent.
