Rare U.S. Model T161 General Purpose Machine Gun, Class III/NFA C&R Fully Transferable Machine Gun, with Accessories

Accepted for service and type classified in 1957, the development of what would become the M60 machine gun began in the 1940s. While the Browning-designed BAR and 1919 machine guns performed admirable service in all American theaters of the war, dealing with German weapons and doctrine raised questions about the future of the infantry machine gun. The German MG42 in particular seemed to be the best of both worlds, having maneuverability in the unmounted role and capable of devastating fire as a mounted weapon. Refined in multiple phases, the final iteration before formal adoption was the T161, which in the end was very close to the M60 that would be America's chief infantry machine gun starting from Vietnam and on through the Cold War. The receiver assembly is marked "US GOVT PROP" on the underside behind the pistol grip, with "EXP 25" and "T161" on the left side. The serial number is repeated on the left side of the trunnion assembly, with the nomenclature "MACHINE GUN/7.62MM T161/U.S. PROPERTY" on top. The quick release barrel is fitted with the traditional long bird cage flash hider, blade front sight and folding bipod, and dated "7 89", and the folding ladder rear sight is installed on the trunnion. A plastic pistol grip with "F"(full) and "S"(safe) selector positions is installed, as is a plastic and steel buttstock. Included with the lot are a large number of spare parts, two extra barrels, two barrel cases, a sealed bag labeled as containing 1000 disintegrating belt links, and a "Minuteman-USA" brand belt loading tool.

ConditionVery good, with 80% plus parkerized/black finish, showing mild wear and handling marks overall. A rough texture is visible on the bipod and gas system. A number of components appear to be later production M60 parts. A few mild scratches and scuffs are present on the plastic components. The extra parts show wear appropriate to age and use, with a visible crack in the extra frame and scattered spotting. Mechanically very good. NOTE: This item is registered as a National Firearms Act (NFA), Fully Automatic Weapon that is currently registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) that is classified as a "Curios or Relic" as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478.
