Manufactured in 1884 as a third model with dust cover rail integral to the receiver and dust cover with serrations at the rear. The accompanying factory letter confirms this rifles configuration: octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, shotgun butt, and casehardened receiver when received in the warehouse on September 18, 1884 and shipped the next day. The rifle is fitted with a dovetailed blade front sight, an elevation adjustable rear sight, and long range Vernier tang sight graduate from 0 to 50. The top of the barrel flat is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking ahead of the rear sight and "44 CAL" at the breech. The cartridge elevator is marked "44 CAL." The lower tang has the serial number. The receiver is fitted with a special order set trigger. The barrel, magazine tube, dust cover and buttplate are blued, the loading gate is niter blue and the receiver, hammer, lever, and forend cap are casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock feature "H" style checkering and are XX deluxe walnut. The left side of the lower tang is marked "5175 XX S." The assembly number "5175" is repeated on the stock inlet.

Excellent. The barrel and magazine retain 95% original blue finish with slight hint of thinning to a brown. The dust cover retains 97% plus, deep and rich original blue finish. The buttplate retains 85% original blue finish. 95% original niter blue remains on the loading gate. The frame proudly exhibits 97% vivid original case colors. The wood is also excellent with minor handling marks and crisp checkering overall. The trigger does not set, otherwise the action functions fine. An absolutely spectacular example of the iconic "Gun that Won the West".
