Description:

Manufactured in 1911 (per George Madis' serial number range). The barrel has a dovetail beaded blade front sight, and elevation adjustable rear sight and the two-line legend followed by the nickel steel and caliber markings on the left flat. A Winchester factory proof is stamped on the barrel and receiver at the breech. British proofs are present. The receiver features a factory style engraving consisting of bold floral scrollwork on a punch dot background, scallop borders, and bugling elk scene on the left side. The scrollwork extends to the forend cap. The barrel and magazine are blued and the remaining surfaces are bright. The left side of the buttstock has a presentation inscribed silver plaque that reads, "Presented to/W. E. Harwood/by the/BOYS OF MAIDEN LANE/1914." Maiden Lane is a street located in the New York City financial district in Manhattan that stretches west form the South Street Seaport to the World Trade Center Site. In the 20th century Maiden Lane was known for fine shopping, especially revered for precious metals and stones. Today the street serves as the location for The Federal Reserve of New York, the Continental Center, the Cushman Building, the Goldsmiths' and Silversmiths' Building. Period New York sources list W.E. Harwood as director of Harwood Construction Company and director of Montague Builders' Supply Company.

Rating Definition:

Fine as custom embellished. The barrel and magazine retain 95% thinned refinished blue finish. The remaining surfaces have a bright polish appearance with traces of blue in the protected areas and heavier amounts of blue remaining on the buttplate. The wood is also fine showing a couple tiny chips and some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. An interesting presentation inscribed Winchester Model 1894 rifle.
