Documented Antique Special Order Winchester Model 1890 Slide Action Rifle with Extremely Rare 20 Inch Barrel and Factory Letter

The included factory letter confirms the serial number, caliber, barrel length, and January 10, 1898 date of shipment. Blade front and fixed notch rear sights on the special order 20 inch barrel with the correct first model barrel inscription on the top flat, "22 SHORT" caliber marking on the top flat at the breech, casehardened takedown receiver, checkered hammer and smooth trigger, and three-line maker, model, and patent marking on the upper tang. Short twelve groove forearm and plain walnut straight grip stock with casehardened crescent buttplate. According to the information on page 236 of "Winchester Slide Action Rifles: Volume I" by Ned Schwing, only six Second Model casehardened Model 1890s were manufactured.

ConditionVery good plus with 30% original blue (mostly on lower portion) with the balance a brown patina on the barrel, 60% original blue finish on the magazine tube, areas of light surface pitting, small dings and scratches, mostly crisp markings, and numerous small dings and dents on the action bar. The receiver has a mostly dark gray/brown patina with faint shadows of original case colors, some darker spotting, and small nicks and dings. and some cold blue on the lower tang. The wood is also fine with numerous small dings, and a small chip and hairline crack visible at the left side of the heel. Mechanically excellent.
