Description:

Third Type Model 1875 rifles were manufactured in 1885, making them the last produced of the three Officer's Model types. This rifle has the correct squared off forend cap with floral engraving and "SWP/1885" cartouche for one of these later Officer's Model rifles. These rifles were sold to military officers as private hunting arms. Trapdoors were known to have been popular with western hunters, and military officers stationed in the West were fond of hunting and wrote back east about their adventures. The barrel has a Beach style blade and folding globe front sight, "R" marked notch and ladder rear sight graduated out to 500 yards on the base and 1,200 yards on the ladder, "V/P/eagle head/P" and "R" markings at the breech, "U" marked barrel band, "US/MODEL/1873" on the low arch breechblock, wrist mounted peep sight, standard Springfield markings on the lock, "SWP/1885" cartouche and encircled script "P" markings on the stock, checkered forend and wrist, screw affixed pistol grip extension with checkering, and "US" marked buttplate. The cleaning rod has plated brass fittings. The forend cap, barrel band, frame, breechblock, upper tang, lock, trigger guard, and buttplate are engraved with primarily scroll patterns along with some floral motifs.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 30% original blue and traces of casehardened finish, mix of mostly smooth gray and brown patina on the balance, light pitting mainly on the buttplate, crisp engraving and markings, and generally minor wear. The refinished stock is very good and has crisp checkering, smooth oiled finish, some minor scratches and dings, and crisp markings. Mechanically excellent. This is a very solid representative example of one of the most iconic of all Springfield Armory firearms and easily one of the most desirable trapdoor rifle variations.
