Description:

This "wender" combination gun includes a document in German from Carsten Pollnick listing a Johann David Hoffer of Berlin in 1743 and provides other family details. The approximately .54 caliber rifled octagon barrel has a dovetailed silver blade front sight, dovetailed notch rear sight, and "I.D. HOFFER" and scroll designs inlaid in silver, and the .58 caliber smoothbore part octagon barrel has a silver "spider" front sight and "IN ASCHAFENBURG" and scrolls inlaid in silver. Each barrel has its own frizzen and pan. The barrels rotate by hand after the front of the trigger guard is pulled rearward. The upper tang has some scroll engraving. The rounded lock has no visible markings. The brass furniture is engraved with a stag scene on the side plate, a rabbit scene on the trigger guard, a soldier on the buttplate tang, a dog and boar scene on the back of the buttplate, and scroll and floral designs. The stock and forend panels have incised and raised relief carved scroll patterns, an inlaid star on the cheekpiece, and a wooden patch box with horn nose cap. A wooden ramrod is fitted on one side of the barrels.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 40% original blue on the barrels, dark original silver inlays, brown patina on the balance of the barrels, gray patina on the lock components, natural aged patina and distinct engraving on the brass, and mild overall wear including some oxidation. The wood is very good with a repaired crack in the forend panel under the ramrod, chip and crack by the sling eye on the other panel, a few smaller chips/flakes, a replaced patch box lid, repairs on the comb, and crisp carving, and smooth oiled finish. Overall a rare and attractive "wender" combination gun very similar to the one used by Gary Cooper in "Unconquered." These specialized guns are far less common than other Germanic sporting guns from the 18th century.
