Description:

The elaborate, exhibition quality engraving pattern on this Evans rifle was done by the 19th century's best known master engraver: L.D. Nimschke. It is Nimschke's masterful signature floral scrollwork on a fine punch dot background that covers nearly all of the receiver, extending down the sides of the magazine tube to terminate in an arrow motif. Scrollwork extends to the forend cap. Cross hatching covers the area behind the trigger. The engraving is comparable to two other Nimschke exhibition quality Evans arms Rock Island was proud to present in our September 2020 auction: nos. 674 and 834 (see lots 53 and 55 respectively). Note the similarities in the characteristic Nimschke scrollwork on no. 674 and the arrow motif on no. 834. No. 834 is only four digits away from this rifle and has been well-documented over the years. The similar arrow and scroll patterns are found Nimschke’s smoke pulls presented in R.L. Wilson's "L.D. Nimschke Firearms Engraver" on page 66, which document Nimschke’s work on Evans arms, especially no. 834. This rifle certainly is the perfect example of exemplary artistry Evans would have wanted to showcase to important dignitaries or at international exhibitions. Elaborately embellished Evans arms are rarely encountered and are highly sought after, but remain elusive on today's market, only captured in books and other publications. Adding to its rarity is that this rifle is one of only 1,050 Transition Model Rifles Evans manufactured in 1876/77. Transition Model series of rifles, muskets and carbines fall into the approximate 500 to 2185 serial number range and feature a flat top frame, exposed loading port (without cover) on the right side of the frame, and two piece buttstock that exposes the magazine tube in the center. The barrel is fitted with a globe front sight and a ladder rear sight (elevation bar absent). The barrel and buttplate are plated in nickel. The frame and lever are plated in gold.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine 97% original nickel plating remains on the barrel and buttplate. 50% original gold plating remains on the lever and frame, heaviest under the stock, with the balance a smooth gray patina. The fantastic engraving is crisp. 40% original niter blue remains on the trigger and loading port. The wood is fine with some chipping at the buttplate heel and minor-moderate dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A great work of 19th century firearms artistry by the master himself, L.D. Nimschke.
